Our Vision

CO2-IMPACT’s mission is to convert CO2 from waste into a national resource by integrating biological and chemical CO2 conversion in a single innovation platform. The Flagship’s identity is integration: it brings together bio-CCU, chemical catalysis, and digital engineering to create value chains not achievable by one domain alone. CO2-IMPACT’s ambition is to position Finland as a Global leader in circular carbon utilisation, providing a blueprint for turning biogenic CO2 emissions into new products, businesses, and exportable technologies.

Key Objectives

Drive scientific breakthroughs in CO2 conversion

Create the fundamental knowledge, redesigned metabolic pathways and bioenergetics and novel selective catalysts, that generate building blocks on which subsequent technology development depends.

Develop scalable CO2 -to-products platforms

Engineer robust CO2 conversion modules (bioreactors, catalysts, materials) capable of continuous, resource-efficient, cost-effective scale-up towards industrial production of fuels, chemicals, functional materials, and food/feed.

Accelerate translation from scientific discovery to applications

Advance the most promising CO2 utilization technologies from laboratory validation to pilot demonstration, through coordinated scale-up, industry co-creation, start-up incubation, and IP management.

Build a national CCU ecosystem with global visibility

Integrate Finnish academia, industry, and policy around CCU by creating an open innovation cluster that attracts investment and talent and aligns pilot infrastructures (e.g., FIN-BioFoundry, Bioruukki pilot).

Educate the next generation and engage society for fossil-free transition

Train inter-disciplinary talents while fostering public awareness, stakeholder dialogue, and evidence-based engagement with decision-makers to support.
